What is BT Openreach Stop Sell?
As you will undoubtedly be aware, BT Openreach will be closing down the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) by the end of 2025 with the aim of moving everyone over to a digital system using a fibre-based internet connection by 2026.
Commonly referred to as the “PSTN Switch Off”, the UK has been transitioning away from analogue technology since BT Openreach first announced its phasing out plans in 2017. On 5th September 2023 it will reach another milestone in its plan for completion: BT Openreach will enter its "‘Stop Sell" phase, when it will be stopping the sale of traditional phone lines across the UK.
What does this mean for your business?
If you are currently using a traditional phone system, you will soon no longer be able to purchase any additional lines or amend your current service. You will still be able to continue using your existing lines (until they are withdrawn in 2025), but after 5th September 2023 no changes can be made to your existing installation, including working line takeovers, migrations, CP transfers, addition of broadband to copper voice lines or bandwidth modify.
What can I do to prevent my organisation from being disrupted?
If your organisation is using analogue lines, you might want to consider assessing your business needs now and migrating your business communications to fibre technology. Even if your organisation uses a modern cloud system, you may still have some legacy connections so, to save any potential disruption, it’s worth checking now to see if you have any other equipment that uses analogue lines, such as security and fire alarms, door entry systems, lifts, CCTV, faxes, PDQs and so on.
