Loire Challenge 2009 - Entropie goes the Extra Mile
15-10-2009
Forty three teams of four cyclists successfully completed the Extra-mile Loire challenge. Each team completed 517 miles and it’s estimated that a total of £80,000 will be raised for charity.
Entropie Director, Alex Gamberini, took part in the challenge with team mates, Nick Crook (Heald Solicitors), Esther Marchant also from Heald, and Linda Plowright CEO of Sports Leaders Alex came up with the name WellHeald and the team decided to raise money for Sports Leaders UK - which supervises sports leadership, training and character building work for young people – and the PSP Organisation which deals with research and support into progressive supra-nuclear palsy, a serious disease with no known cure.
Whilst Nick is a veteran cyclist who has participated in six previous events, Alex, Linda, and Esther had little recent cycling experience.
However, they all embarked in a rigorous training routine which culminated with regular Saturday rides of 35 miles or more from various villages in the Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire area. Once the team was up to speed they travelled to France in glorious autumn sunshine which continued for the duration of the three day event.
Linda started the first day early in the dark riding through woods south of Rouen. The riders alternated in spells of ten miles and travelled 176 Miles to Le Mans in the Maine province. The next day Esther wore her pink tights to ride round part of the Le Mans Motor Racing Circuit.
On the last day, they rode a scenic loop around the hills and chateaux of the Loire returning via Chambord and Blois. Shortly before Amboise they stopped, left the car behind and all 4 rode up the hill together to the finish at the hotel after 517 miles of cycling. Later they enjoyed a tour of a wine cellar and a magnificent dinner before walking back to the hotel in the dark past the floodlight Chateau overlooking the river.
They returned to Milton Keynes a little sore but satisfied after 517miles and some very successful fund raising.
