SIP Trunking - The future of IP telephone lines
15-01-2008
SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is a multimedia signalling standard that allows companies to communicate over IP connections. For organisations wanting to make full use of their ADSL Internet services, a SIP trunk (an IP telephone line) can be provisioned onto their existing broadband service to allow a modern VoIP compatible PABX system to make telephone calls over the Internet.
Unlike in traditional telephony, where bundles of physical wires from BT are installed to provide telephone lines, SIP trunks allows companies to replace these via a SIP trunking service provider over the Internet. Within the next 10 years, 90% of telephone calls worldwide will be made over IP links
SIP trunking can provide major cost benefits to companies as they can combine both their telephony and data connectivity over the Internet together. The cost of a SIP trunk is also below the price of current costs for analogue and ISDN telephone lines. However to enable SIP trunking to work successfully is dependant on the quality of service from the ADSL provider and size of bandwidth.
It’s not the headline download speeds that you need to enable SIP trunks to work reliably but the upload speed of your ADSL. Mixing data and voice also have implications to quality and performance. Considerations to routers and other network equipment need to be made!
Finally a lot of PABX providers say that their systems are SIP compliant, but it is important to ensure that the SIP provider has been approved by the manufacturers. This means that any service issues can addressed between the PBX supplier and SIP provider. For more details on SIP Trunking and the latest VoIP enabled telephone systems contact Entropie today on 0845 330 5539
